Registration Planning Tools
Students are responsible for creating and updating an academic plan. It’s important for students to share their academic plans with their assigned advisors. Students should reference and update their plan each registration period to determine what classes to take next.
Virginia Tech offers a great academic planning program called HokieGPS. And students can learn more about using the HokieGPS tool through our Academic Planning program.
Students are encouraged to check in with their assigned academic advisor at least once per term to review academic goals. It’s always a good idea to send an academic plan to advisors before registration opens to ensure it still aligns with the student’s goals for graduation. Students can find their advisor assignment in HokieSPA under the View General Student Information tab.
The Course Catalog contains program degree requirements, financial information, undergraduate policies, and academic calendars. Students should refer to the course catalog for the year they entered Virginia Tech. Example, if Fall 2025 is the first semester enrolled, then the student should follow the 2025-26 catalog.
The Course Catalog assists students in understanding their requirements for graduation and exploring course options and other programs.
Students should run a Degree Audit Report (DARs) each semester. DARs is a computer generated report that matches the requirements of a degree program with a student's completed or in-progress coursework. Students should use this report to establish what courses they should take in a semester to make progress toward graduation.
DARs is available on HokieSPA under the HokieSPA tab.
Always remember to check the add/drop and course request dates on the Office of the University Registrar’s website to stay up to date on registration dates. Information about change of major and other important academic dates are also available here.
The Timetable of Classes is a database of all the courses available in a term. Students can use this resource to search for classes before the registration period opens to plan their schedule. Please review this video for instructions on how to understand and use the Timetable of Classes.
To assist in schedule planning, please download this Google Sheet. An example of how to use the sheet is available in the Example tab. Students can use this template to plan for classes as well as other obligations. Users must be logged into their Virginia Tech account to view the sheet.
