Hokies on Board Mentor Program
The Hokies on Board Mentor Program is a free, virtual mentor program that runs during the summer. This program connects new incoming first-time college students with currently enrolled Virginia Tech students. During the summer months, mentors work with new students to help them prepare for their transition to Virginia Tech, serve as a point of contact, and as a resource.
You need a VT email address to sign up for this program. We will start assigning mentors in mid-May.
What Mentees can expect
- An assigned Hokies on Board Mentor who can help you keep track of deadlines and answer questions about starting at VT
- A welcome phone call or text
- Frequent communication with your mentor
- Monthly virtual meetings with your mentor throughout the summer
- An in-person welcome event during the first week of classes in August with all mentors and mentees
Time Commitment
From mid-May through early August mentees are expected to meet virtually with their mentor about four times based on their schedule.
Tips for meeting with your mentor
- Do not be afraid to ask questions. Your mentor was once a new student; they know what it is like to be a brand-new student at Virginia Tech. They know some great tricks and tips. No question is too small.
- You do not have to have questions to meet with your mentor. Even if you do not have any questions, your mentor is an excellent person to get to know and talk with; mentors love getting to know their mentees.
- Have fun! The mentors are great people and this is a great way to make new friends.
