Find Your Advisor

Who is my academic advisor?

Each undergraduate student at Virginia Tech is assigned an academic advisor. Advisors can help you explore majors, register for  classes, locate tutoring resources, shop study abroad options, find ways to gain real-world experience and monitor your progress towards graduation.

You can find your assigned advisor by logging into Hokie Spa, where you can see your advisor listed under the “View your General Student Information” tab. For summer academic advising you will work with an advisor from your college but that person may not be your permanent advisor. All new students will have an advisor assigned by the beginning of Fall semester.

Your Advising Community

These advising services are an overview of offices that provide additional support for students. Depending upon your interests and goals, you may on occasion be using multiple services at one time in addition to your assigned major advisor. Be aware of the variety of advising resources available to you when you need it.

There is additional advising for students who are on track for Law School or Health Profession Programs (e.g. medical, dental, pharmacy, etc. ). These advisors help you keep the big picture in mind and make recommendations during your undergraduate career that will best prepare you for your next step.

We support student-athletes in balancing their academic and athletic demands by providing comprehensive academic support services such as tutoring, studying assistance, computing technology, and academic and individual skill development programs. Student-athletes are varsity athletes. Student-athletes receive academic advising services from college advisors; the advisement is supplemented with input from SAASS counselors regarding NCAA regulations and practice/competition time concerns. See below for advising tips for student-athletes.

Student-Athlete Academic Support Services

Are you a veteran? You may need assistance with utilizing military scholarships or need different resources on campus to help you transition to life as a student. Below are three tips for advising as a veteran.

  • The VA will only approve payment for classes that are needed for degree; this does include electives. A veteran or military connected student can pursue more than one major or minor, but all classes need to meet a need under a major.
  • A student using veterans educational benefits, like the GI Bill, only have a total of 36 months of available benefits (8 months for standard academic year Fall & Spring). It’s imperative to try to complete all degree requirements in 4 academic years before benefits exhaust.
  • Maximum VA living stipend payments to students are based on full time enrollment (12 crs for undergraduate students, 9 crs graduate students). Also, the earlier a student can register, the quicker they can be paid their living stipend. This can make force add time-lines really hard for VA benefit users.

Transitional Advising offers students the opportunity to work with an advisor one-on-one through the exploration, planning, and implementation process to change their major. Transitional advising is intended for students outside of University Studies, and is directed to students who are in transition out of a particular major for various reasons and/or need assistance when not accepted into their desired major.
